Lesbos, “Lesbian” and Sappho

Sappho, an ancient Greek poet, lived on the Greek island of Lesbos around 600 BC.

Her poetry is intimate, often addressing love, often directed towards women.

The word “lesbian” is an allusion to Sappho, originating from the name of the island of Lesbos.
