Castel Sant’Angelo alias Mausoleum of Hadrian: Overview
The Mausoleum of Hadrian is more often known as Castel Sant’Angelo.
It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. Later it became the burial place of the Antonine emperors until Caracalla.
Over the years, the Castel has served as a fortress, prison, and Papal Quarters.

Castel Sant’Angelo self-guided – What is inside?
As you go inside Castel Sant’Angelo, you will find the tomb of Hadrian at the very first floor.
The Papal Apartments in the fourth floor are beautiful rooms including ceramics, sculptures, and paintings. Visitors can also see the famous open-air stage and admire the spiral staircase as well as numerous works of art, statues and frescoes.
